    confused Oil in cooling system

!.9cdti.. Just finished work early as car seems to be running hot. Had a look under bonnet and released the coolant header tank cap to find what I can only describe as a chocolate coloured expanding foam like substance over flowing out. Is this the head gasket or is there something else that can cause this... TY...

Oil to coolant heat exchanger (sometimes called an oil cooler)? They have been known to fail resulting in oil/coolant mixing.

Just my opinion but I would have opted more for the oil cooler if has one(?) if not head gasket but usually you would see evidence of coolant going in to oil rather tha oil into coolant if head gasket had gone. Is your oil as it should be?

oil seems ok however the level has dropped nearly off the stick which tells me its oil going into water. I take it the cooling system is going to take some flushing out. Very messy indeed...

If it's the head gasket the flushing out of the coolant system will be the least of your problems. I would think changing the head gasket wont be cheap!!!
