My advice is try them, see which one you prefer. There are known problems for both engines, which are easy to fix.

I do about 10K, if I drive it steady around 60mph, I get over 40mpg.

The oil burners will have a diffreent take on which is the best car, thats why I said go and try. The diesel can be tuned up with a re-map, it isnt so easy to extract any more power from the VVT. However, the VVT often gives more then the quoted 140 ponies from factory.

The petrol has less miles, is younger and cheaper, you can buy a lot of petrol for £1K difference.

Mileage and where you spend your time would be the biggest things to consider. Personally I'd have the cdti, but that's just because I prefer a diesel to drive and am more confidant working on them. I do over 15k a year and usually average just over 50mpg, but can get over 60 when in granny mode. If you spend your days driving round town the vvt would probably be better. The Sri is prettier though.....lol

Definitely the 1.8. Newer car, 21k less miles, Exterior Pack, Factory Park Pilot(so thats about £1500+ worth of extras), less things to go wrong, less overall cost.

But as Benson said, try them both see which you prefer.

my usage would be about the same, I do electrical subby work so move to different sites around kent/london. I average 1000-1500miles a month. I like them both the petrol has good extras but more expense in the long run, the diesel I think is overpriced for a sandard model wth cloth seats but is less tax and more mpg.
