    Default New double din

Hi there I just bought a new Sony xav 63 double din unit. I also got the pins to take the old radio out. I have tried and searched methods to get the old cd30 out but with no success. Any ideas? Also where is the best place and what type of wiring harness do I need. Was hoping to get one where the volume button etc still work on the steering wheel. Or is this not possible . Hope someone can help thanks.

Hi fella. Taking the old unit out is simply a matter of inserting the pins until they click lock in, and then easing them slightly sideways (in the direction of the left and right windows) then pull on them to pull the unit out.

If you can't insert the pins it is likely to be because there is a tiny allen key based grub screw (in possibly each of the 4 holes) that you need to unscrew first.

Sorry but can't offer you any help with the wiring conversion/leads but I'm sure someone will be along soon who can assist

    Good luck fella

Yeah I have taken the grub screws out and put the pins in done all as you have said many times but its still solid like will not budge. The steering wheel controls I have are the three buttons on each side. Thanks.

Grub screws?? Yours must be a CDR2005 or something, not a CD30 surely? (is your car a pre-facelift?)

The older OE units can be a right pain in the backside to get out! The trick I used to use (when doing it for a living) was to take the release keys you have, and put a 45 degree angle bend in them, halfway down the length of the key. This allows greater purchase on the release clips, and should allow you to remove it easier.

Excuse the crappy MS Paint picture, but this is what I mean. (viewing them straight down)

LOL I have grub screws in my NCDC2013

Seriously though these headunits can be a nightmare to remove and it is difficult to see why until you break one. Effectively the removal tool is supposed to push a sideways locking metal clip away from the locked position where it is trying to go by pushing towards either the left or the right (left one tries to lock by moving left, and the right ones by moving to the right). The removal tool for instance is pushing the left clip out of the locked position by pushing it to the right and vice versa.

See if you can shine a torch and see where the removal clip is trying to go, and to see if it has located correctly and is moving the locking clip as I tried to describe.

In my case one of the left clips and one of the right ones was not being correctly engaged by the removal tool and the radio remained locked.

You could also try pushing in a single pin tool like a torx driver where you might have a bit more luck at keeping it aligned correctly.

If the removal tool is in any way bent such that by the time it is entering the hole on the radio front it is no longer perfectly aligned at 90 degrees then on some units you will find the removal tool pin is not entering correctly and therefore not disengaging the clip.

Hope that all makes "sense" ?

Yeah it's a pre facelift 2003. The removal pins
already have the angle in them.

If they already have the angle in them, then try making it a bit more acute.

Worst case scenario is that you have to strip the dash down. You might be able to release the radio by removing the blanks from either side of it, and using an allen key to push the release clips in. You might also find it easier to remove the glovebox to give it a bit of push from the rear.

You won't be able to push the cage out though as it's more than likely secured with an 8mm bolt to the dash (T20 torx on later models) but you should be able to push the radio itself through the holes in the cage. A flat blade screwdriver would help with leverage but be careful you don't break anything!
