    Default Problems starting 1.9 CDTi 2008 120

Hi, I have looked for similar issues on threads but can't see anything which is a direct match.

    Vectra 1.9 CdTi 120 57Reg.

Starts up fine (hot & cold conditions without fail).
However if the journey is short when it starts again it is difficult to start. It has always eventually started.
Car drives fine, no other issues.
Took it to a Vauxhall dealer who ran a diagnostic check, everything came back clean, no error codes.
Since then I have replaced the diesel fuel filter, replaced the battery, added injector cleaning solution to fuel. All of which have failed to resolve this issue.

My next train of thought is to replace the starter motor..
    Anyone any ideas?

How's your temperature sensor looking? My 120 is exactly the same, i have to cycle the glow plugs twice or three times to get it to turn over straight away in the mornings (which i put down to the plugs getting old), but after a short journey, the glow plugs won't cycle as the car believes its warm enough to do without them, which is when this issue starts. I imagine if you could get the glow plugs to cycle once after a short journey, the problem would be mitigated.

My temp. needle rarely moves even on long 140 mile journeys, until im sitting still of course in traffic, then it will get to just above 80 if im sat long enough. After reading on here i reckon it's the temp. sensor. Which if it is faulty as i suspect, might be giving incorrect readings causing the ECU to think the glow plugs aren't required.

In summary, the main cause of the problem i believe is that the engine block isn't hot enough to turn over smoothly straight away after a short journey, but it's not cold enough (according to sensors) for the ECU to cycle the glow plugs. Whether that's just an inherent problem with diesels since there's no spark to ignite the fuel im not sure. But i doubt it's your starter motor.

Djlee, thanks for the guidance I was dubious about the starter motor anyway.
Regarding the sensor do you mean the engine coolant sensor or the Camshaft or some other sensor?

My 120 was like this too. It seems common on the 120 engine.

However, your thermostat looks to be fubar (temp needle barely moving) This will cause probs as the ECU is not getting the correct info

Djlee, looks like you need to change the thermostat, I had same as you, temp gauge not moving at all, cured with thermostat change.

As far as bad starting after short journey, how short is your short journey?

You can fool the system by disconnecting the temp sensor, the one on the thermostat housing, the ECU see it open circuit and cycles the glow plugs for maximum time, tried that on mine when I had cold start problems, but mine has never failed to start after what I would call a short journey of around 2 miles from cold. I only had start issues from cold, that was cured by a new starter motor.

My slow starting cdti(120) was cured by a new starter motor, but the engine turning over was very slow and laboured, particularly when cold and i knew the starter was fubared... When i got the old one off, the engaging cog was absolutely knackered on its bearings...
