    Default Cooling system

Been having a smell of coolant some mornings in the car when it has just been started, have checked to see if I have been loosing any coolant and can't notice any drop in the level but have noticed the level of the coolant does not really rise when car is up to temperature running, only when the car is shut off the level rises a noticeable amount and the cap hisses letting pressure out the back of the tank is this major coolant problems like head gasket or that or as simple as a faulty tank cap any help appreciated thanks

Classic problem is a leak down the side of the radiator. The metal corrodes on the off-side, where it meets the plastic. Take a look at that before anything else. Often the cold causes the problem to get worse.

Have read that the expansion bottles are prone to developing hair line cracks at the back. Might need to be replaced.

Checked the water level in the car today and all was fine, drove about 20miles and started to smell the hot coolant smell again so pulled over and the water level in the header tank was at the top of it and spilling out the overflow on the back of the tank can anyone help with this

If the header tank has a hairline crack, then the cooling system will not be building up to the required pressure. This could also cause the water to be pushed out through the crack when the water is hot, remember hot water expands.

The hissing may even be air coming back into the overflow bottle when the water starts to cool and contract.

Put a new tank cap on there and went for a long drive on the motorway and all is well no hissing from the cap or tank hopefully that has fixed the problem
