Default Major Coolant loss pre-facelift 2.0T Edition 100!!!!!!!!

    Hi All

Got in the car this evening to drive home from work and the low coolant indicator was on. Before setting off I checked the level in the header tank and it was below the minimum mark. There was also a damp patch under the car.

I drove the 10mile journey home and when I pulled into the driveway there was quite significant drip on the right underside behind about level with the rear of the front wheel arch.

Now the car has been standing a while I've been out to check the coolant level and the header tank is near enough empty.

I have arranged to take it to my trusted mechanic first thing in the morning but he has warned me that he has a very heavy workload and even though they maybe able to find the problem with an initial inspection they certainly won't be able to work on the car for at least a few days.

I've been unable to find a schematic of the cooling system on-line but would anyone like to hazzard a guess at what pipework or component may have failed? Due to my dissability I'm unable to get underneath the car or jack it up and there is nothing to see while looking down into the engine bay.

    Thanks for Reading

    Nidge

I would hazard a guess it is either the top/bottom radiator hose or the Radiator

Thanks for the very quick reply. Unfortunately it's definitely not the radiator as the leak is about 3/4 to the rear of the engine bay and appears from behind the front right suspension arm.

The coolant bottle sometimes gets a hairline crack in the back of it that only opens up when the system is under pressure.

    Update.

I managed to get the car the 1/2 mile or so to the garage and the initial diagnosis is that the water pump has bit the big one.

They won't know for sure for a day or so due to their current workload and so I've left it with them. It certainly can't be driven as by the time I got there the header tank was again nearly empty.

I guess I'd be right in thinking this is going to be quite a major dissasembly of the engine and thus a large bill with be forthcoming. I suppose it would be advisable to have the chain(s) replaced at the same time, it's just ticked over 90,000 miles.

    Regards

No, there's a special Saab tool that costs about £35 that can be used to remove the water pump without disturbing either the timing chain or the balancer shaft chain.

Did you do it yourself and if so was it hard. I have been quoted around £200
