Default Another 120 with a problem...

For once its not ours that's playing up! LOL

Our neighbor a few doors down has recently bought a 2008 Vectra Design Estate manual with the Z19DT engine, its full service history, All filters, Cambelt, Clutch, DMF, EGR all within the last 20k miles... It currently has 102k miles on the clock and looks to be in great condition and once going seems to pull like it should...

Now, what seems to be wrong -

Car has a lumpy idle, the rev counter stays at around 850 RPM and does not fluctuate, but vibration is felt through the steering wheel. This seems to stop with a slight touch of the accelerator or if the car is rolling. The MPG has dropped to less than 40 MPG, previously it was high 40's / low 50's. Thermostat is working as it should and there has been no change to driving style or route.

Could this be caused by a faulty air pipe? A sensor? A hole in the exhaust? He seems to think the car was fine until it had an oil change, but its had at least 2 more since the problem started.

Any ideas? I have my own code reader and (cough) software.

have you read any codes from the ecu to me it sounds like a faulty maf sensor or maybe a boost leak

I plugged in my code reader and it has nothing stored. MAF? Is that the one at the air box or the inlet? Boost leak? Is that the large pipes either side of the intercooler, or the smaller ones I read about going to the turbo unit?

maf is the one in the mailbox they plugging your maf in from your car. boost leak could be the big intercooler hose or the little ones next the the radiator on the right hand side

with opcom can you get the injector deviation values when idling. it could be an injector starting to dribble a bit. if you can post these and perhaps a live data log I may be able to work out what the problem is.

It really could be any of a number of things (injectors, air leaks, sensor failures etc.)...
...but I had a similar issue on my 150ps that turned out to be a fuel filter issue. It had been changed within the last 8000 miles, but symptoms were rough idle and mpg 40ish instead of 48-50. Changed it - design had notably changed on the filter from a flat-surfaced cylindrical filter paper to a corrugated filter and the filter I removed was unusually grey/grubby - and mpg straight back up to 50.
As the oil/oil filter has been changed recently though, I assume the fuel filter was also changed?

yes the oem ones are zigzag pleated for greater surface area. ****e pattern ones are straight pleated so clog quicker.

fuel quality makes big difference. my mother used Tesco diesel mostly and when I last did the annual service her filter was completely black. my dad always used shell in his van, and the filter was almost as clean as new.

Needless to say, mother no longer uses supermarket fuel.
