something else which is worth keeping in mind is long term costs.

I can't comment on tyres on VX's because I haven't needed to change any on my Sig yet, but on my previous car I had several sets.

The worst were a set of 4 "black circles budget choice" tyres (alas I can't remember the actual brand, but I'd never heard of them) That is a mistake I wont be repeating, they were downright dangerous. Bearing in mind this was a Skoda Fabia with just 68 BHP it would spin the front wheels every time you tried to move off with any sort of pace. They only lasted about 10,000 miles too (presumably because they spent more time spinning than gripping!)

In contrast the best set I had were Michelin Energys. Pricey tyres to be sure (I think they were about £80 a corner 4 years ago on 14 inch rims) but they held the road like super glue in all conditions, gave me ~ 5mpg over the Firestones they replaced, and the best thing of all was they lasted 40,000 miles. Over the life of the tyres they were considerably cheaper to own than budgets, though of course that doesn't help when you're trying to find the cash to fit them in the first place!

I have Mowhawks all round on my estate and they are fine - I think a lot of it depends on how you drive - if you want to tear around in bad conditions ie rain, snow, ice, etc you need a good quality tyre - I try and drive to the conditions and don't have a problem wiht mid - range tyres.

Not to keen on the energy type tyres, we had some on the missus Focus when we first got it and they were so hard that they just didn't grip. After a couple of slides that simply shouldnt have happened I changed them all for some decent Uniroyals and the problem disappeared.

I'd agree with certain brands, and TBh I'd think twice before fitting them to the Sig as she's more of a performance beast than my old Fabia was. I did find the Goodyear ones didn't grip at all well, while the Michelins were magic.

i think that's probably true, I also suspect some types work well in one size and less in others
