Default Budget tyres really that bad???

    Hi,

I've just bought a 2004 Vauxhall Signum 3.2 Auto which will be my new daily driver. It needs a few things sorting out (a local garage have given it a good looking over and I'll get their findings on monday). I knew it needed at least 1 rear tyre for MOT and the dealer I got it off had put 2 new very budget tyres on the front (never heard of the manufacturers) - obviously just what he had available and they are non matching. I dont like non matching tyres on the same axle, and with it needing a rear tyre as well I'm going to put 4 new tyres on it.

Sorry for the waffle...anyway just how bad are budget tyres? Bearing in mind this is my daily drive, it's not a performance car, it wont be going into corners quickly and i'll be driving like a granny to try and get somewhat decent mpg, would budgets be suitable? It's something I've never bought to be honest and I've always been in the 'it's the only point of contact between you and the road' camp. However I'm not exactly flush at the mo and I can get 4 nankangs/nexens for little over £200, and for a little bit more can get maxxis (all brandsI've at least heard of). I assume all tyres have to meet certain regulations so would I really see much benefit and reward in spending an extra £150+ and getting something like kuhmo's which I guess are still only budget/mid range?

Reading online reviews all these budget tyres get very mixed reviews ranging from very impressed and perform like more expensive tyres to avoid - ditch finders. If it was a car that would see some enthusiastic driving I wouldnt even ask the question however it wont, I have another car/project for that, the vauxhall will see short local journeys and motorway driving.

    All thoughts welcome.

    Thanks

Hello, i use Falkens on my veccy, found them to be a good tyre, not too noisy and pretty good all round,i even have them on my winter alloys.Bought mine from Camskills for around £60 a corner-then i had the cost of fitting.Plus Camskills will price match if you ring them.I had Acelleras on before the Falkens and they were awful-but everybody has their own views.Have a look on Camskills website-----Dave

    thanks for the replies.

checked camskills, but I couldnt see 215 50 17 listed for the falkens. I suspect even if they do make them they'll be £75-£80 a corner. I read on here about using different size tyres but I think I want to stay as vauxhall intended.

Never heard of Radar tyres but they'd be the cheapest I've seen. Interesting. How long have you been running them?

I was told to use 225/45/17's as they are more popular and cheaper

When I was looking I found that there was very little difference in price between 215/50/17 and 225/45/17 tyres despite the urban myth about the 225's being much cheaper.

I think budgets are a real gamble, some good, some bad. I had some budgets on the bora front and they were LETHAL in the wet.

Maxxis make some cracking motorbike and scooter tyres. They are budget tyres, but seem to be really well made and give good grip and wear.
