If you take the lead out of your right foot you can get some good MPG.

My run home was 1 mile urban roads.

    Then M40, M25 and A1M.

Then the last 6 miles urban roads again.

Kept to about 55-60 on motorways behind lorries I was not in a rush.

I must admit I was suprised. Was runing on shell vpower (as a treat once a month) but im sure that did not make much of a difference.

I get 97mpg in my 3.2 Gsi, running LPG, that's like 194 mpg at the pumps

I met a girl like that once too, she could always get more than you would have expected from the pumps (Great Girl BTW )

    LOL

OK, let's try some units conversions, as we only count in litres per 100 kilometres...

So, my tractor displays 8.3 l / 100 km in urban use only. That is... 34 mpg (I guess I must use Imperial gallons, not US ones - maybe some day you'll switch to international units, like the rest of the world, including Australia and New Zealand ? )

When driving on the road, it drops to 4 l / 100 km cruising at 110 km/h (speed limit). Conversion gives a bit more than 70 mpg.

    http://tdiclub.com/misc/conversions.html

Of course, you don't always cruise when driving. I hardly have a mean value handy, but I know I can drive about 900 to 1,000 km before filling the tank, vs 600 km in town (I fill up the tank twice a month).

    I hardly ever could fill in more than 50 l in the tank, despite it's said to have a 60 l capacity... Anyway, 50 / 600 x 100 also gives 8.33 l / 100 km, which exactly matches the board computer mean consumption (8.3 l / 100 km).

So driving on the road with my tractor, usually much faster than 110 km/h when I can btw (but don't tell cops LOL) and knowing I can then drive at least 900 km without refilling (went several times to customers' in the far north of the island and went back to the capital without refilling, plus some urban driving), I'm sure it can reach 50 / 900 x 100 = 5.5 l /100 km, giving a not so bad 51 mpg.

    This was the tractors' revenge.

Now considering the car's weight (thouh still around 200 kg less than mine) and the "small" engine, 46 mpg is very good for a petrol car.

Actually, there should be a balance point where too small an engine means not enough torque, leading to high fuel consumption. Looks like the 1.8 VVT is rather well balanced.

Look at the catastrophic Suzuki Alto : 3 cylinders, a small engine, and drinks four times as much as my car ! And at the cost of petrol (it's about 25% more expensive than fuel, here)... Plus it has ridiculous brakes

I'm averaging over 60 from my tractor on my 25 mile commute home. Will try to remember to take a pic in morning!

    Default

same here -58mpg on A roads,... had 72mpg on my run back from Wakefield to Scunny. Short trips are a pointless measure, so long as I get past 650 before fill ups then I know I'm doing well on mpg. My last fill up was after covering 670 miles and filled with 52 litres at £1.439 (£75)

It is impressive mpg for a 1.8vvt, but be under no illusions, you will never match or come near to the tractors.

I know I'm not included but if I get 350 miles to a tank of fuel I'm relatively happy, we never get near a motorway so its decent economy for us up here in the turbo..

As said, not bad but this is my run home on mostly 'b' roads, 25 miles in half an hour.
