lets get to the bottom of this shall we?

I think the OP means instead of just updating his existing firmware/map for a newer one but to update flash it with one from the 280bhp version. First off the tech2 would report that its the wrong file for the car but this can be got around by amending the Vin No. when asked to check it. second, all you mappers out there know what happens if you try to write a firmware/bin file to an ecu and the software/hardware versions dont match it could brick the ECU and you'd have to BDM it. Now what Paul is getting at with proper mapping tools the 280bhp map could just be overlayed onto the 255bhp ECU like any normal remapper would be able to do.

Think the long and short of it is no the dealer cant just flash your ecu for the 280bhp version instead of 255bhp incase of bricking the ECU... but can be 'remapped' with the same map as the 280bhp by the correct person.

    think thats correct?

That about summarises it! Dealers can update your firmware for your given spec, but can/will not load a non-approved map under their Vauxhall franchise. So, a £30 update job cannot be to load the 280 firmware onto a non-280 Vectra. However, a tuning company can do a £600 job to basically load the same map onto you non-280 PROM!!!

I had an Astra G many many years ago that DID get a performance improvement from the dealer - I had an EGR fault that was remedied by blanking off the EGR, and the updated firmware I received made throttle response much snappier. Did some 0-60 runs and found my 0-60 had reduced from 12s to 10.5 (videoed runs, same stretch of road etc.). So probably a few extra horsies. Plus it was FREE!!!!

There was one for the 1.9cdti to slightly reduce its power output in the lower gears to try to save the DMF, it raised customer complaints as lack of performance!

Thanks everyone, looks like I'd be as well to just go for the full 300 brake remap if I want more power from a 255......

Going from a cdti with 190bhp I'll probably be content with 255 for a wee while anyway

BSR offer stage 1 remaps from both 230bhp and 250bhp to 285bhp on 2.8 V6 Vectra.

I don't know is it intresting for you or not, but here in Russia there are some 255h.p. OPC cars with 280 remap. NO problems detected whith these cars so far. As far as I remeber you are just updating the ECU via Tech2 with the programs for 280h.p. motor.
