Default Temp Gauge not working - temp sensor - thermostat? help!

    Hi,

Recently bought a car from auctions, and i have no history of problems it has

Temp gauge doesnt move at all no matter how far driven.

Noticed when engine cold, there is a flow through the header tank, and ran for 5 miles, felt pipes, red arrow was hot but had no problems holding it for any length of time.

The Yellow arrow, was stone cold.

    IMG_1833.JPG

Then i had a route round, and found a sealed temp sensor, genuine vx part.

Could this be the problem with what i have described?

The yellow arrowed pipe is your air intake into the throttle body. Air from the intercooler so should be cold. Mostly like reason would be your thermostat, check the sticky post on here and the how2 for DIY replacing. Under £40 on ebay.

Its common for them to take ages to heat up.

And as the guage doesnt start reading till 70 Degree's you might not see it it move.

What head unit do you have as the CD70 has hidden menus where you can see the real temperature.

If there was some temp reading when hot and static, which dropped when moving I'd go straight for dead stat.

No reading under any circumstances and I'd be thinking there's possibly no signal getting to the gauge. The reason though... well there I'd be looking at a Computer Based Application to narrow down what works and what doesn't.

Testmode on CD70 type headunits (ie not the older single DIN headunits):

Press and hold SETTINGS until your hear a bong (around 5 secs)

Press BC, Audio, Nav, Sound as appropriate to scroll through data pages.... to show all manner of interesting data.... including coolant temp. No coolant temp - dead sensor (or break in the line).
