confused New Signum Owner - could do with a bit of help

    Hi,

Just arrived back home after a 4hr round trip to collect my first ever vauxhall - a 2004 Signum Elite 3.2 V6 Auto. 73k miles on the clock, serviced not that long ago and had cambelt kit fitted. Bought on a bit of a whim and viewed it in the dark - which is most unlike me....just hope it doesnt bite me on the a*sr

Bad bits in no particular order....

    1. Only 1 key so will have to get another one from Vauxhall - I'm sure that wont be cheap!
    2. No user manuals - will I be able to get replacements from the dealer maybe? There's so many gadgets and I dont know how to use them
    3. The radio is in safe mode. Is this just a code I need to unlock it and can I get this from the dealer?
    4. A bit of white gunk under under the oil filer cap. The car has been used little of late and when it has been used it's only been very short journeys. I'm hoping this is just condensation build up and not anything HG related
    5. Hopfully not related to #4 - the temperature gauge on the drive back didnt seem right. It sat steady on the second marker (the one below the 80 degree mark) for most of the drive home and during one bit it drop to the first marker. What should the temperature sit at?
    6. Steering vibration above 60 odd mph.
    7. A noise that sounds like it's from the n/s front wheel - like a tuff tuff noise that speeds up/slows down with the wheel rotating - will check brake disc and caliper tomorrow
    8. On the motorway driving through the yorkshire fog, I was in cruise control and suddenly a red light flashed on the bottom left of the cluster, the revs seemed to drop momentarily and it knocked the cruise control off. It happened that quick and I think at that time a warning light on the dash came on - a triangle with what looks like a skidding car in it. Is this the traction control? The warning light stayed on for the rest of the journey and I couldnt re-activate cruise control.

Think that's most of it But other than the above, the budget tyres that are fitted, and a couple of age related marks on the body work, I think it's alright lol. The interior seems nice and clean though - well it did in the dark anyway.

Any help or advice would be gratefully received, and sorry for such a long post.

    Thanks

    Elliot

Radio Code - might help to know the headunit model as older ones need a radio code and newer ones are 'married' to the screen and so need a different approach and a different code and 2004 could go either way (probably older though).

Engine temps tend to hover around the 85 mark with most engines. Yours might just be lack of use (That's the 'mayo' you reported under the oil filler cap) and settle down with use, of might be the stat on the way out. Time will tell.

    thanks guys

just been busy searching/reading on this site and looking at the online manuals (found the proper booklets and wallet to keep them in are available on ebay so will compare prices to what the dealer will charge and get some ordered).

the head unit has a cassette player and I think a 6 disc multichanger. I think I'd like to eventually change this to the newer type without the cassette player if thats possible, but that will wait until the important things are sorted out. Would like to look at installing sat nav too but again that's towards the bottom of the list.

I think tomorrow I'll try and get it booked in at vauxhall or somewhere to give it a good looking over and get a diagnostics done (see if the ESP has a fault). MOT is up beginning of April so might get it MOT'd early too to see what I'm up against. I'll also give it a clean and get some pics up. I hope I've not bought a lemon.

    thanks

The car is going to a local garage tomorrow (who apparently are bmw and vauxhall specialists if that makes a difference) to give it a good going over. I've kept some cash to one side fully expecting some work to need doing, but if it's a nail I'll have to re-access. Guess I'll just have to wait and see what tomorrow brings.

Just gave it a quick wash and took some pics. IF it's a keeper I'll give it the full clay bar and machine polish treatment which I'm sure will improve it a lot. Anyway a couple of quick snaps...

Looks better in the pics than in the flesh. Being blue it seems to show up the stone chips more than other cars. The main bad bits...

Ok dont worry about the mayonnaise, do what most of us with 3.2s have and remove the filler neck from the rocker cover and put the oil cap directly on. the filler neck always gets mayo cos it sits in the cold air stream from the grille.

your temp gauge could be thermostat or maybe a dodgy guage if you are getting other dodgy electronics? When my stat died it was stuck open so was on 80/85 in traffic but then down to 70 on the move.

You can download manuals from the net tbh, or there's always a few knocking about on ebay.

Your headunit is likely a ccr2006 like mine - cassette and 4cd changer.

Actually looks a nice car mate! Most of these i bet are simple resolve. Things such as manuals you will find on Egay! Signums are excellent motors and i gaurentee you will love having it! The gunk sounds like possibly cndensation been in engine, most cars have this after a while! Clean it if it comes back quick then maybe an issue but check oil on dipstick if it dont look normal then may be HG fail but you drove it home so dont sound like that to me! Temp gauge sounds as possibly a faulty sensor or maybe coolant has been changed and not bled properly! I recently done my coolant and it did similer, a health check at a garage is a great idea .

Right just thought I'd update this...

the garage had a good look over it and they've found:

O/S/R coil spring snapped - looking at prices I'm leaning towards buying a full set of lowering springs (PI or Spax possibly). What should I expect to pay for a set of springs to be fitted?

N/S/F rack end has play in it - it's not the tie rod end and he said it would be fine to replace just the one side?

front to rear brake lines corroded - will just let them sort this out

    N/S/F CV Boot split

Exhaust bracket snapped - he says he can prob repair this

Slight oil leak on engine - he says he's pretty sure this is just a rocker gasket but is a bit of a pig of a job

1 rear tyre border line on the limit and the other rear has worn side wall - new about tyres and will be putting 4 new ones on

So all in all could have been better but at least it isnt 2 cars stuck together!

Said the 'mayo' would just be condensation "they all do that" as people above have said. Phew

Steering wobble, wheel noise and even possible the ESP coming on could all be down to rubbish/worn tyres, broken spring and play in rack end.

So again thoughts welcome. Are there any other bits that I should look at having replaced while other bits are being done or take the chance to use uprated parts? Havent got a fortune to spend but want things done right.

    cheers,

    Elliot
