Default First ever problem - revs go up and down

I've had my Vectra for almost 5 years now, and apart from some coil springs, i've had no problems until now....

    It's a petrol 2.2 Direct Auto (2006 model).

When I start the car the revs go up and down quite violently, then the engine comes to a halt. While the revs are misbehaving, pressing the throttle seems to have no response.

This happened at the weekend while I was out. I called the AA and he cleaned out the throttle body and a few other valves(?).

In the end, he disconnected the MAF sensor and although the revs still misbehaved, it allowed me to drive and leave the car at my local independant garage. It drove perfectly well.

The garage called me yesterday saying that the problem is not with the MAF sensor. They are somewhat baffled and are still investigating - they are calling an auto-electrician today and suspect the ECU or throttle wiring.

    Does anyone have any ideas?

I had this with my old zafira and it turned out to be the plug on the ecu. They just cleaned the connection and it was fine after that.

Turned out to be the Throttle Body.

Got a new one fitted today, and the garage also cleaned out all the other related pipes and stuff. Cost about £270 plus diagnostics.

Runs perfectly now - feels like a new car again.

    New one?!

Sorry if this isn't what you want to hear, but there's plenty of info on here about servicing throttle bodies!
