Default Strange issue with instrument cluster!

    Hi all

I'm having a very weird issue with my instrument cluster, be very grateful for any help or advice!

Basically I'll be driving along and the panel will light up like a Christmas tree then totally die. I get a load of random warning lights come on then they go off, the illumination goes off and the clocks all read zero. A stop/restart seems to cure it. The indicators, headlights, cruise control etc all still work just with no activity in the cluster.

It first did it a few weeks ago but then was fine since so I put it down to a random gremlin. However, this morning it did it about 5 times in 30 mins. Each time I pulled over and restarted which temporarily sorted it. The final time my other half managed to snap a pic of the warning lights before the cluster died. Weirdly, while we were pulled over I hit the hazard warning lights and the cluster leapt back into life - not sure if that is related!

The first pic is the first sign, a couple of red lights. The second pic is when it all lights up prior to dying - notice the speedo/revs have dropped to zero. The whole process takes maybe 5 seconds.

    Anyone have any ideas?!

You could try cleaning ABS plug in engine bay (I think its that one) normally its either that plug or battery/alternator HTH

Hmmm - weird! Can anyone direct me to the procedure for removing the plug/cleaning it? I just had a batt/alternator test so I think they will be ok.

If it's not that is there anything else that could be causing it?

    Thanks

Another thing, could be the connectors behind the cluster, even though the problem is cured upon restart the connectors could be loose, I'd go with the ABS plug first as its easier to get to.

It could be the CIM and I wouldn't be surprised if it was tbh.

Thanks chaps, is there a 'how to' on the ABS plug? I've had a search around but can't find anything.

If it was the CIM is there a way to check? What is involved/cost if it turns out to be that?

My dad's vec done this a few times, he cleaned the abs plug and the fuses on the left side of the dashboard, been fine for a good few years now. All the info he needed was found via the search button too.

Well that's some good news! I'll have another search around but if anyone has the links that would be great
