Default 1.9CDTi (8v) Timing belt tension

I changed my timing belt a week or so ago but ever since I did it the belt whines. To be honest it did whine before I changed it but both pulleys and the tensioner were changed.
I wasnt entirely sure how to set the tension but some googling revealed I had to set the pointer so it pointed at the hole in the backplate. I found the pointer and what I thought was the hole so I slackened off the bolt that holds the tensioner in place and levered it until the pointer was as close as I could get it to the hole then tightened up the bolt again. Pressing on the timing belt between the top two pulleys makes the pointer spring up and down and it does indeed settle near the hole but not directly on it, have I done this right? This belt really does whine! Im thinking of taking it apart and slackening it off a bit or is this a bad idea?

Another whine issue lol! Maybe it's not on the toothed belt path? Could be aux belt pulley

It is on there nice and straight. Funnily enough my next job is the aux belt as I noticed it was cracked when doing the timing belt, ive got a new one just waiting for me to fit it. I take it its ok to run the engine with the aux belt removed just to see if the whine goes away?

yes it is ok, just make sure you remove it completely so it does not get caught anywhere

Does it whine from stone cold or only as it warms up?

Do the "remove aux belt" test to see if its quiet, its sometimes the alternator bearing that gets noisy on the 120's

But check all the ancilliaries on the aux belt run for wear on the pulleys or play in bearings etc.
