Default Cooking on a grill instead of a stove whilst camping.

Just getting items together for taking the little man camping and im currently looking at the cooking side of things. Having looked at all the stoves they dont look all that great and if im going to buy something i dont want to be doing it twice. Ive seen a really decent mobile grill in my local costco and the build quality is excellent but soon after a mate informed me that obviously grills are not designed for having pans on, my question is has anyone cooked on a grill just using pans and how did it come out? Any input very welcome

I was thinking something a bit more heavy duty, would probably do some camping with mates which would involve large amounts of steaks and sausages. Im just thinking if i want to do some beans or boil some water would it be fine to use on the grill. Im aware it would take longer than normal.
