Default Does this sound like a stuck EGR?

Posted in another section; but probably more relevant here:

    2005 3.0cdti Auto - 74k; serviced at 71k.

Hi all, would like some advice with a problem my car's developed today please. It drives fine at low revs but there's a massive flat spot at 2,500 revs which is very difficult to rev past, and if I put my foot hard down it hunts around the gears because the engine won't rev. It feels as if the engine is being choked when it reaches 3,000 revs (almost like hitting the rev limiter except that it will eventually struggle past that point). I've got no dashboard lights on and prior to today, the car ran absolutely fine. When I eventually get it to struggle up to 3,500 revs, from there to the red line it pulls like a train.

Am I right in thinking that the EGR valve should close under the following 2 criteria: either at 3,000 revs; or when the engine is under load? My suspicion is that the valve is stuck and possibly needs cleaning?

Does that sound likely from the symptoms described? Is there anything else I should be looking at as well?

    Thanks in anticipation

    John.

I don't have any experience with this engine, but if it's anything like the 1.9cdti, unplug the EGR and see how it runs.

Thanks dieselwig - I'd just read that on another thread. Sounds like a gd idea to try. Unfortunately I'm not good with working on engines so wouldn't know where to start looking for the right thing to unplug :-( I'll have to get my mechanic to look at it I think.

Bad day all round for me today - was on the way to Kings Hosp when the car started playing up - my son in law was involved in a serious car accident this morning and is now in an induced coma. Could have done without my car going wrong.

I would recommend that you get it code read even though the MIL light is not on, it still may have some codes stored. Many of the simptoms you describe could be the air flow meter at fault, if you unplug that and give it a run and it gives more normal performance it will probably need replacing. however if you do start unplugging components the MIL light will come on

Do these engines have swirl flaps ? At low revs if they were stuck closed the required airflow wouldn't be a huge problem ... but at higher revs it certainly would.

Rather wasteful, as it would take about one hour to disconnect the sensor, but it will go straight into Safe Mode once disconnected

The Y30DT has a similar setup, but it is very reliable
As yet I have only heard of this being an issue once, and it's not cheap to fix either (as is typical with this engine)
