Default High consumption / initial checks?

    Hi,

Have just bought a 2003 Vectra 2.2 petrol auto. 93k on the clock and last service was 2010.

It seems a little thirsty. As I'm unsure exactly when things were last done, I'm going to change oil and air/fuel/oil filters and maybe clean the throttle. What else could I check to see if I can improve the MPG (I'm not sure of reported MPG as the display is corrupted so awaiting second hand replacement)

    Edit:
Also, when cold and slowing down I sometimes feel a noticeable jolt which goes away after a couple of miles. Anything to worry about? Should I check/replace auto gearbox oil?

What are you getting, and what sort of driving? The 2.2 is thirsty. Though a full service never does it any harm.

Just to add I think the display is just that, a display. Changing it wont have any effect on the information it displays

I brimmed it a couple of days ago and it may not be as bad as I suspected, approx 170ish miles on half a tank so far..

The display itself seems knackered. Only the lower half shows and even that seems 'smeared'. I can just about see the remaining miles counter and it seems all over the place - yesterday, it was going down by a mile every couple of seconds and then was back up again later. (I know replacing the display won't fix the numbers but at least I'll be able to see them)

Just to make matters worse, I tried opening the bonnet earlier to check the coolant level (had the warning light yesterday so topped up.. hopefully not a gasket issue!) and the lever doesn't seem to be doing anything. Am going to try pulling the cable with plyers but it may have popped out of the latch. From what I've seen, it's a right ***** to open and it's fairly likely I'll have to break the grill?

Has the lever come out of its mounting in the car?....

The lever works - it moves but there's no tension on the wire. I unclipped the wire from the handle and tried pulling with pliers - it only comes out a couple of inches and then doesn't come any further so it's not snapped but might have popped out of the release mechanism?

Ahhhh...you cant get access to the lever/release mechanism from underneath the car..not easy without access to a ramp etc but is achievable

    Whoop! I got it open!

Just needed to use a long drill bit poked through the grill. I even had a hammer, chisel and stanley knife out ready to cut my way through the grill. Am glad I persevered.
