Default The common steering wheel vibration at speed fault.(FIX).

If you have a steering wheel vibration at speed and have had numerous wheel balances without any change try the following:

I had this very problem with my Signum from when I picked it up. I tried having the wheels balanced but this was to no avail!

While doing some routine maintenance checks I found some play in the wheel from the 3 & 9 O'clock axis. I replaced the inner Tie rods, tie rod ends and the front ARB bushes. I then re-set the tracking, took her for a spin and found the steering to be firm responsive with no vibration at all!
    Happy days

Doing inner tie rods, track rod ends and front lower arms on mine tomorrow hopefully if we have time after doing some work on someone else's car first (got all the parts sat here to do it). As my steering's got very loose and floaty recently.

Loose and floaty steering! Mine was like this when I first test drove the car after fitment of the new parts. I found it was due to the tracking. It was toeing in! After the tracking was reset the response is crisp and true.

Nah, mine was absolutely rock steady previously, went round corners on rails and drove like a sports car (mind you I spent £1300 on the suspension to get it that way). It had been getting a little looser and I'd noticed it and at my last M.O.T. I got an advisory for the tie rods and track rod ends, so they're all bought now and waiting to be fitted and hopefully it will all be back to normal after a re-alignment.

I have this vibration issue. Since I got new tyres fitted I have had them balanced at 3 different places with no avail. Although, other than the vibration I have no other steering problems. Is the any way to visually check the tie rods and track rod ends before I take the plunge?

Like the Op said - jack a front wheel up grab the wheel at the 3 and 9 o'clock position and rock it to see if there is any free play/movement in the joints. Your steering wheel should move at the slightest movement of the road wheel. You can also get underneath and while the wheel is raised off the ground, take hold of the track arm and try and move it around watching to see if there is any movement at either end joints - although this can be difficult to detect with the weight of the wheel/suspension hanging on the joints. You should also do this check with the wheels on the floor if you can get access - ie on ramps.

ah! Mis-read the original post. I took wheel to mean steering wheel. Got it now. Thanks.
