    Default Wrong spring?

    G'day!

Vectra failed MoT due to broken nearside spring, so I got a spring and a guy is fitting it today.

Mechanic rings up and says it's the wrong spring, too short I phone motor factors place and they say that there's only the one spring listed.

    What's up here?

I know folk say replace both springs but due to other circumstances it isn't possible financially at the minute and mechanic said just do the one that's broken.

My GSi also recently failed on a snapped OSF spring..... I obtained OE replacements (as a set/pair) and did compare old with new as I had both out.

Obviously, the snapped one was a fraction shorter than the complete old one, but as you might expect, both were shorter than new springs due to the wear & tear over the years. This is pretty much the reason for replacing in pairs... to maintain correct geometry, so the vehicle handles correctly.

Vx wanted £160 to supply new OE GSi springs (ident TG... 0523), but shopping around I got the same for £115. Even if things are tight (which they are for me right now) the cost of replacing a pair is less in the long run....and a hell of a lot safer.

You could think of it as similar to having two tyres on one axle... both worn to 2mm tread.... you replace one and now have one with 2mm and one with 6mm... then. So the old one has far less grip and worn rubber, while the new has loads of grip and is firm, new rubber.

What are the motor factors using to find the spring? Your number plate? Sounds like an sri spring and not standard maybe? My mechanic now adays recommends only changing 1 spring due to the frequency of springs snapping given the state of the roads.

You see that's the funny thing, I'd expect the new spring to be bigger but the mechanic is saying it's too short

As for the difference in handling, maybe at 'high' speeds but not at the level I drive at

There are several different ones depending on whether you've got an estate or hatchback and then whether SRi or not.

1.9 CDTi is all very well.... but standard chassis?...sports chassis?...lowered suspension?... with or without aircon.....

Take a look at the options for item 19X ... plenty to choose from : http://ecat24.com/opel/catalog/part/...9,41550,41546/

    (assuming it's fronts)

Rear Springs (Section 5) does quite well too : http://ecat24.com/opel/catalog/part/...4/41568,41569/

And all this is assuming the spring(s) currently fitted were correct as per your original build, to start with.

Just click on GB in the upper right corner.

You could always try using that site and searching using your chassis number.... or anyone with EPC can do a decode on your chassis number and see what it was originally built with.

I bought a rear spring off ebay for a standard vectra c and when I took the old one off the new one was almost 2 inches shorter. Thinking I had the wrong spring I went to GSF and there's off the shelf was also smaller. Anyway I fitted it and it was ok, ride height the same no problems.
