Steering seizing up

So the steering on the 1.8 sxi 02 I bought to do up is a bit iffy, when driving at speed handles like a dream better if it had 4 brand new tyres but that can wait til MOT. My issue is when I steer quite hard at low speeds, 3 point turns and so on, the steering seizes up and the steering symbol comes on the dash. Could this be related to lights dimming when steering? Alternator?

Check the battery DIN rating, could be at the end of its life and switching the Power Steering Pump off
Alternatively, the Power Steering Pump itself is at the end of its life (but normally this just switches itself off and dies)

Check there is enough fluid too.

Sounds like alternator - get that and your battery checked out - and check the plug in connections on the pump - especially the big heavy duty one

Had this on a 2.2 Vectra i used to have
Mine was low on fluid (resevoir is between drivers wheel arch and headlamp )
