    Default advice about gigabit network switch.

    hi my router has only got 4 ports and i coud do with one more. would a Ethernet switch help me . and if all my wired ethernet leads were plugged into the switch as oposed to the sky router network file transfers would be faster , and whats a gigabit switch ? thanks

    A switch is pretty much like an extension lead. If you wire one up, I doubt if you will be able to differentiate between the speeds from your existing router, and those from the switch.

    Gigabit is just an enhancement in speed. Unless you are moving large amounts of data around your network, then it's probably not worth it at.

    Like most upgrades, it's totally plug and play. It can take a fair amount of tweaking to get it running fast.

    Although you might have a gigabit link between two or more pc's if one has a slow or older hard disk, then the drop in speed is significant.

    Yes you can buy a switch or hub which can plug into yr router to give additional physical ports.
