    Default Which alternator?

Broke down on the way to work tonight, started with the battery light, was nearer to work than home so carried on. 2miles to go I get ABS and traction/slip lights. 200 yards further the power steering goes. I limp onto a layby and call recovery. He turns up and checks battery and alternator, alternator's had it.

So, which alternator do I need. My mechanic is happy to fit parts I supply, just need to get the right one. 55 plate, preface, 1.9 cdti 120.

Any ideas where to look too please.

Hmm, replaced mine yesterday, but did it myself and handed in the old one and asked for a direct replacement. As I understand it, there are a few alternators depending on the spec of the vehicle - so if they have heated seats etc., they need a higher current rating. Sorry, don't know more than that.

CDTi cars should have the 140 Amps model. 120 Amps absolute minimum, and 100 Amps not suitable at all. On all diesels, it's mainly a matter of huge current consumption at startup, because of the engine very high compression.

Always replace with the 140 amp one especially if its a cheapo make.

Better still remove your one and take it to a auto-electrical shop and have them repair your unit.
