Yeah, but dock + shipping over 100 dollors. A bit much for my liking I just hang on a bit longer.

I have been busy rooting my nexus7 so I can use it in the car as a host and run multiple USB devices as slaves eg dvb dab dongle, external stick, bluetooth keyboard, this way you can charge your tablet and power up all the usbs off the nexus battery or externally powered. Normally running GPS full screen brightness and a single USB the input power can't keep up with the power usage.
Have you bought a dock yet, mine should come on Saturday hopefully, although I plan to keep this one for the house. If it can be opened without damage then I may just buy some pogo pins and try making my own for the car. The new Nexus 7 should be out soon so these ones will be selling even cheaper soon.
Yeah mine came a couple of days ago, I got mine from Asus directly and in the item description its say the front of the dock has polished glass, its not its plastic. I got two for the same reason as you to strip one to use the pogo pins in a home made dock to fit into the double din facia (removable). Have a look on xda developers it has lots of info on kernel and usb coms updates for fitting into car.
@cliomjh 102 did you ever get this fitted? I put it on the back burner but i'm thinking about starting it again.
No I never got round to the fitting part of things, I have all the gear sitting in a box and even routed the nexus with one of the kernel roms but didn't like the layout side of it. I then had to unroot it and lock it so I could send it back to Asus under warranty as the screen started to go yellow (the glue unsticking) at either side, so while it was being repaired a brought a ipad mini. So now I'm doing it all over again with the ipad to install into the insignia (when I get one) lol.
Depending just how much of a good fit you want, you could do what the guys at SoundmanCA have done with iPad Minis: http://www.soundmanca.com/
Essentially, you make a buck (a to-size replica of an ipad mini/whatever) and cover it with tape and releasing agent, then cover it in fibreglass - building up the layers to achieve a decent amount of structural strength. Let it go off, trim it, glue it into a fascia adaptor and attach a few neodymium magnets to it to hold the tablet in place.
I'm making that sound hugely easy though, it does take a lot of work but it will look the dogs if you pull it off! I'm constantly impressed by what SoundmanCA churn out, they're the top boys at this kind of thing!
