Engine temperature up and down

It's another one of those threads I'm afraid - possibly or possibly not a problem arising. Any comments are welcome.

So for as long as I can remember (had the car 3 1/2 years) my 2.0 DTI warms up after about 6-8 mins of driving then stays constant at 85 degrees, regardless of outside temp, i tend to stick to 70-75 for economy. I do 70 mile commute every other day on mainly dual carriageway.

Recently my mpg has fallen from a steady 50 mpg to 45-47 (brim to brim measuring). The temperature gauge has also started moving between 78-86 for no apparent reason.

Any thoughts?

is your heater on when its moving between 78-86 ?

blower number 1, heat just about half way

try it with the heater off and see if the gauge moves between 78-86

Had the same issue recently on my 2.0DTI, literally changed the thermostat today and was relatively easy, im sure there is a how2 in the How2 section. Havnt seen whether its fixed the problem yet but i will find out Monday.
