My 1.8 SRi does just under 3000rpm at 70mph.

Its all relative remember. 3000rpm in a petrol is less than half of what it can rev to. 2000rpm at 70mph in a diesel that can only rev to 4000rpm is half what the engine can rev to.

1.8 is a known decent engine. There is a poll somewhere on here on this subject on reliable vec c engines and 1.8 had a very high poll rate

If I take it easy then I can get 46mpg on a run. It shifts once you get to 4000rpm and the VVT kicks in. It would be nice if it was quicker but then you'd lose the mpg.
@sheepish on here regularly gets 50+mpg out of his.

Have you not considered the v6 cdti, ive had the 1.9 cdti 8v and 16v the 1.8 petrol ,the 2.0 turbo and the 3.2 v6 and in my opinion there is nothing that compares to the v6 diesel,i get around 110 miles on 20 pounds worth of fuel, mixed driving and is quicker than the v6 petrol where it matters.

The V6 diesel is so smooth, and same as Marko says, depending how you drive it, they can give good fuel economy. At 70 mph my V6 is only doing around 1750 rpm plus it will pull from there like theres no tomorrow! I've had 1.9's (120bhp models) and on a run at 70mph the V6 isn't much heavier on fuel and I can reguarly see 53-54 mpg.

My Siggie 3.2 auto is quite long geared, it's relaxed and low at 70mph but let's face it, it is not an economy engine so still only doing about 35mpg. Being pre March 2006 tho it is at least 'only' 270 quid a year tax and not 435.

Never had one but everyone seems to rate the 2.0T engine, and it can be remapped to 200bhp easily.

Depends what you want really, I do rate diesels having had a remapped Vw PD, but they never sound as nice as a V6 but they are of course far more economical and can give good performance too.
