Default cruise control fault, new stalk fix problem?

i have a problem with the cruise control on our 2003 1.8 sri. its not something i use often, but would like it working properly.
the fault seems to be with the top button on the stalk, it works intermitantly, ie i need to press it between 5-10 times before it works, the bottom button however works perfect, turn its on but obviously to the speed it was doing the last time, as soon as i touch the top button it cuts the cruise control off.

so from what i can gather, the fault only lies with the top button, the bottom button and the rear long thin button work fine. i have read a few posts on here so tried the trick of putting my foot under the brake and clutch pedals to pull up to see if the switches are at fault but it makes no difference.

is it just a simple case of getting a new (second hand) stalk and fitting it, will this sort out the problem, or does the problem lie elsewhere?

Remove the stalk, strip it and clean it. Worked a treat for me

Took me about 15 minutes all in, following the How To on here

BUT, remove the stalk the proper way with a paper clip, not by just yarking it out.....!

I have this exact same problem! I find if you pull stalk out then press top button it works, so think it just a dirty connection! I am going to take stalk out and clean it. See if that works, i use my cruise control all th time, i love it especially with the miles i drive to get to work.

Search for the Selotape fix or its all a waste of time.

The cause is vibration, fixed with selotape !
