1.9 cdti urgent help please anyone?

Hi,

I have been cleaning all the gunk out of my engine etc and have by accident broken one of the vacuum lines off the carbon vacuum box.
This id the black box thing that is situated at the back of the engine next to the crank breather canister. it has two vacuum pipes going into it.

Question is can I just join these two pipes together until I get a new one, the box seems to be a one way affair and apparently it is only a carbon filter?

You should be ok just connecting the vac pump to the boost control solenoid.

Hi there,
The black vacuum box I mean is underneath the egr valve to the left as I look at the engine in the pic.

I have just connected the two pipes together and all seems fine, I have ordered a new one way box/filter off ebay so hopefully it will be ok until it arrives.

You should be ok just connecting the vac pump to the boost control solenoid.

Do that and you'll have NO vacuum brake assist

Edit: actually, ignore that, i forgot the brakes are fed from a larger tube on the Vac pump

Yep we were talking about the same black vac box! On the newer models (as you can see in the pic i posted above) the pipe that comes out the front side of the vac pump goes pretty much straight to the boost control solenoid (bottom right of image - cream coloured) albeit via two silicone/rubber pipes and a metal pipe in between.

On your engine, the vac line goes to the vac box on the back of the engine and back to the boost control solenoid at the front via two parallel metal pipes as shown here:


You probably didn't need to buy a new vac box; could have just bypassed it and the two parallel metal pipes all together with a short length of silicone tubing and you have a mod like the later facelifts!

lol...hahaha....brought a new/secondhand box off ebay already....in shear panic! it was only a tenner delivered so no probs.

I have done as suggested and connected the two pipes that go into the vac box together with a silicone hose although apparently this box has a charcoal filter in it, do I not need it on there then?

I would imagine the filter was fitted to prevent moisture and bacteria getting into the vacuum pump but since the newer models don't have it, I guess they over designed again.

I will by pass the metal pipes altogether and leave the box off then,I am a bit new ish to diesel engines as you can tell .

How long should I leave the battery off to reset everything?

I didn't realise my engine didn't have the vac box until I came to doing the inlet manifold swap using the how 2 on here and realised the one in the how 2 (second pic above) has a vac box and mine didn't. I later learned it's just something Vx removed from later production models.

Today I learn't from this post that it's just a carbon filter!? For Vx to have removed it from production it must be over design i.e. waste of money!

Has anyone heard of any CDTI vac pumps failing due to intake of contaminants? I haven't.
