****** 'eck lad !!! My 3.2 redlines at not a lot over 6,000 ... if your 1.9 is idling at 10,000 I suspect you'll be needing a new engine VERY soon.

But assuming you just pressed the 0 key too many times, if the engine's cold it's likely to idle a little higher for a short period until it gets up to temperature.

My V6CDTi sometimes does it. If I press the demist button it drops back to 700ish. This only happens when it's warming up, so 10min after start up.

It more than like has happened before but not generally something most people would notice as we all generally drive off to wherever we're going.

As long as it's not loitering at the 1,000+ area when at normal operating temperature as well, I personally wouldn't be too worried. There's always other possibilities such as the throttle body getting a bit gunged up or sensors and/or switches getting past their sell by dates, but if you're really concerned, for now just monitor how it behaves in general, how quick the coolant temp gets to normal, more smoke than normal, using more oil, economy becoming worse, etc and any patterns might suggest where any potential problem lays.
