    Default Key chip help

My brother has lost his key for his vectra was wondering about getting him a new one

the key shop said 25 to cut a key but it won't star the car cause of the chip now I was thinking of taking chip out of his old key and taping it to the barrel to get it working with both keys

    whats your thoughts

The transponder chip is part of the PCB.

It isn't separate like it was in the Vec-B and Astra-G keyfobs.

If he lost the key locally, then there is a chance someone could use it to steal the car. Ideally he needs a new key cutting and the old lock/immobiliser codes deleting from the car and both keys remarrying to the car again with new codes.

You could either get a new key and all the other work done by a Vx dealer = pricey

or, IIRC a new virgin fob (i.e. never been previously coded) from somewhere like ebay and then get someone with a code reader to do all the programming = cheaper than Vx.

Trouble is, it isn't just a new key that needs cutting. If it's a lost key, then the old key barrels, door, glovebox, even ignition if not deactivated... All of them will need changing to eliminate the lost key problem as far as valuables in the car are concerned. A bit like your house front door really.
If you are not prepared to take that route, and will take a chance that the key won't just turn up and be used by someone to steal the contents, then...A key coding / special codereader device will be able to -
"Delete" all existing Keys and "Re-Program" any remaining and authorised keys you may have. It would also be able to program a new key once you have had the blade cut.
The missing key issue won't go away, if it ever turn up, it will just never be able to start the car again, unless it is yourself that finds it, and decides to "Re-program" it back to the car.
