    Default Economy Test!!

With fuel prices the way they are and fuel protests on the way, I have decided to see just what my V6 CDTi can do if needed.

Filled up on Saturday morning. On the way home today I needed to go to Sainsburys. seeing the pumps wern't too busy I topped it up again.

Well, I had done 65 miles and just over six quid, she was full!

That worked out to just over 46mpg and the range is now showing 635 miles! I'm happy with that.

Driving how I drive normally I get around 41 ish which is about 400 to 3/4 tank. So by easing back off the throttle and driving in super economy mode has gained me 5 mpg!!

With the current fuel fun going on I've come up with a radical plan.

Mrs GSi and I currently do a lot of around town motoring, and the odd long run. Now about town the 3.2 gives about 9 mpg. Not the best

So ' in her wisdom' Mrs Gsi has suggested that I break out the mountain bike to go to work..... I took this to mean

Time to get the CBR600 back on the road

    Did I understand her right??

We seem to average around 24mpg over the course of a tank, its worth mentioning i'm only here half the month and the good mpg figures are from her indoors. When I return and drive it properly lol the firgures drop below 20 mpg. Most of our driving is in the town so the figures arent great, although when on a long run 35mpg was acheived which I was pleased with I spent most of the time bang on 70mph though. At the end of the day though the car was bought for reasons other than economy alothough with the way prices are going I feel a 3.0 v6td is needed.

round town we get 42mpg in our 1.9 cdti, but the most ive ever had on a run was 55mpg and showed 721miles range, keeping the car between 2-2500rpm.

The wierd thing is, on the next trip, same road, same speed it can show 47mpg.

I think air temp/density make a huge difference.

Last night I was out and the outside temp was reading about 13C (the coldest I've driven in, in about 4 months?). The car felt much more responsive and pulled stronger!

So far I'm getting about 30mpg overall with my 2.2 direct. That includes a fair bit of motorway driving at around 85mph (no comment), and some town driving. Add in a few traffic jams on the M4 too!

This is for a estate though, so it would be a bit worse than a saloon/hatch.

Question: Out of interest, should I expect fuel consumption to improve as the engine loosens up, or get worse? Currently she's on about 2600 miles.
