    Default Fume smell, smoke test??

Hi all, not been active for a while, been busy fixing other people's cars and hospitals etc!

Anyway, now i'm a bit slumped... Exhaust smell in cabin, been looking for answers on here but far too many to look, so little time.

I've had a look under car today after fixing brake fluid leak at rear hub, took my chance to inspect for leaking fumes, flexi seems fine all joints/gaskets all hold seal, brought car back down, strong smell from bonnet whilest running idle,

Is there any sort of test like smoke test where u can identify by colour of smoke leaving colour on area of leak??

I will re try flexi with someone blocking rear exit box so i can try inspect flexi once more,

Few things can cause this mate:

    Exhaust flexi.
    EGR gasket.
    Leaking swirl valves.

May be a few others too

Egr valve the threads are weak! Any thing i can use to seal it? While screws arent tightable!

I tested flexi and all connections while engine idling for leaks. Dont feel anything apart from cooling fan blowing.

Smoke test? How to do it and what to buy?

Cant use bolts as threads inside hole is worn. Bolts are ok. I've used thread tape to see if it'll help, no luck. Cant afford time to replace manifold (top part)

Only smell fumes when idling etc but dont smell it when driving.

Gasket is new. Well, 3 months old. Always smell before new one tho.

If you can work out if it is definitely coming from the EGR valve with the knackered bolts, you could always helicoil it, just be careful. If you're not confident a garage may be able to do it without taking the manifold off. Should only take half an hour.

Or simply try re-cutting the threads with a good tap, it is amazing what you can restore. Or tap out to a slightly larger bolt.

Did this on previous CDTi, literally took about an hour all in, and makes them better\stronger than OEM.
