    Default Sticky oil?

Is it normal for engine oil to be sticky when smearing around your fingers?

I just took some of the oil cap and spread around my fingers and it did not seem very oily. Its getting a full service this weekend with all filters. Last oil and filter service was done 9k miles ago..

(also a friend of mine says its metal in the oil but its hard for me to believe? specially as the engine is running fine!)

Does it feel different off the dipstick? Its more than likely just gunk building up on the underside of the cap. How often do you change the oil and filter?

The oil on the dipstick is a bit better but it still feels weird, it does spread and stay oily but still is a bit more frictional than oil in the canister :/

Maybe in desperate need of a change, the Dti have an element filter, as opposed to a screw on type?

Im assuming this is mineral or semi synthetic , the mineral part will degrade over time as is oxidises , making it thicker and more viscous and one of the reasons you change the oil.

Change the oil an filter. Run it for a day or two an drop oil and filter again. And put fresh oil and filter of good quality in. And keep an eye on it.

sounds like its lived a hard life going past it's services.

What colour is the oil (seriously not a daft question) on a diesel I'd expect it to be black within few hundred miles.

Good advice - oil and filter change, drive for a day - then oil and filter change again...
