Default Advice needed please - is my alternator on its way out?

    Hi,

I need some advice please. I'm having intermittent problems with warning lights on my dashboard.

Basically first the battery light flashes on and then off, followed by the emissons light (also flashes on then off) and then the ESP light comes on stays on. Sometimes there is also a stutter in the engine when the abs light lights up.

All lights remain off when I switch the ignition off and back on again (until the problem occurs again).

I haven't had the codes read yet as I'm thinking it's the alternator starting to play up, but that said the voltage at the battery terminals under fast idle is between 14.1 - 14.2 volts (with no electrical equipment on whatsoever).

Anybody got any ideas or agree that the alternator is starting to die?

This happened to me too, but all in the space of around 2 miles. More and more lights came on the dashboard before the car died altogether. It jump started ok but was dead again by the time i got home in another mile or so.
The garage fitted a new alternator and the problem was cured.

That's why I'm not sure mine is the alternator at fault, as I would expect it to happen all of sudden as in your case. Mine seems to be intermittent and the car has not died altogether - although it has cut out a couple of times at idle.

    Anyone else have any ideas?

I've just been out and checked the voltage at the battery at fast idle (2500rpm) with the main beam lights on and the voltage hasn't dropped at all and still reads about about 14.2 volts which is why I have my doubts about the alternator being faulty. I guess as the fault is intermittent at the moment, this doesn't mean much though as the voltage could suddenly be dropping causing the warning lights to come on!

Anyone else agree the alternator is dying or coiuld it possible be the CIM?

Isnt there a problem with the ABS plug on some Vectras in the engine bay? Give it a clean. The voltage seems about right from the alternator.

I did clean the ABS plug last year. I'll give it another clean just to eliminate though!

OK, here’s an update for you all! I‘ve now read the codes and there a total of 6 all of which are ‘Not Present’, and as you would expect they all cleared OK for now (but I’m sure they’ll reappear when the ‘blip’happens again)!
I’ve listed the codes below and most of them seem to relate to CAN-Bus and the specific modules not being able to communicate with the Engine Control Module, and one low voltage on the Electronic Climate Control Air Quality Sensor.
Anyone else have any thoughts on the cause of this? Could it be down to the voltage regulator in the alternator suddenly dropping voltage intermittently? As I mentioned in my earlier post, I’ve checked the voltage at the battery terminals with the engine at fast idle and it reads 14.2 volts even with the headlights on, suggesting there isn’t a problem with the alternator.

Before I condemn the voltage regualtor in the alternator I want to check all the earths are clean and secure. I've managed to check (there were none loose) and clean the earths at the left and right strut turrets and on the inner left hand side front wing, but unfortunately this did not cure the problem and the blip happened again!!

Does anyone know where the engine earth goes from and to on the Z32SE?
