    Default Automatic gearbox, recommended?

    Hi Everyone,

I'm looking at trading in my current Vectra C MY 2006 which I had from new for a very tidy low milage Vectra C MY 2008 with automatic gearbox. I specifically want a car with auto box. The car seems to have solid service history confirmed by dealer that serviced it.

I searched the forum and found several guys that had issues with automatic, though as with everything people usually post when they have issues. I was wondering what is the experience of the people that didn't have issues. Does it drive smooth, does it react quickly on kickdown, that sort of thing?

Both cars have same engine (1.9 cdti 150) in them, only my is gts the one I'm looking to buy is estate.

    Thanks.

Not specific to the vectra but oil changes are the common problems with a auto box or the lack of them.

A good oil and filter change every 30-40k will see the box work efficently it's life, rather than leave the oil in there for 70k when the problems start, so do make sure the oil has been changed on what you buy.

Mine's a 3.0cdti auto, so not sure if it's the same gearbox as the 1.9. I would rate it very highly; kickdown is good, changing up at low revs when the engine isn't under load is good and all changes are smooth. The only criticism I have is that I've had cars with better tiptronic function (the computer won't allow it to change up when I want it to). Fortunately, because it's so good when left in 'D' that's little disadvantage. All of which is no use to you if it isn't the same gearbox as in the 1.9!

Actually it's the same box (AF40-6). Thanks for responding!

Agreed, I change the gearbox oil regularly in my current (manual car) too. Besides, according Opel/Vauxhall service plan where I live you're supposed to change the gearbox oil in automatic gearbox every 4 years/60t KM or every 6 years/80t KM, depending on the type of gearbox you have.

As far as I know, my gearbox oil has never been changed. I thought I read somewhere on here that if the gearbox is working fine, it's best to leave it alone.

That's what my local Vx garage keep telling me year after year when I book in for servicing. They are not one for turning down work given the oportunity either. They say there is no recommended mileage/year interval for the autobox oil to be changed.

My 2.2 Direct auto now has now done 83,000 miles. The oil in the autobox has never been changed, and touch wood is as smooth as the day I bought it 5½ ago with 20,000 miles on the clock.

As I said in one of my earlier posts - where I live the interval for oil change in VeC automatic gearbox is 4 years / 60k kilometers (37 500 miles) or 6 years / 80k kilometers (50 000 miles) depending on the type of gearbox. As far as I know most manufacturers include automatic gearboxes oil change in the intervals, it's ceratinly the case over here.

I'm not so sure about the "if it works leave it alone" approach. It's a complex mechanical device with a lot of precision parts and lot of friction between them. The oil in it isn't designed to last forever, you change your engine oil regularly as well, you don't wait for issues. When you start noticing something going wrong it's usually too late.

Engine oil gets far more easily contaminated by the combustion cycle though. That said, modern engine oils are manufactured to make service intervals less frequent.
