    Default Signum 2.2 direct dead

    Hi,

A couple of weeks ago I took the little one to the nursery (short drive, less then a mile) and returned home. Parked the car, went inside for 10 minutes and then went back to start the car to go to work. Car wouldn't start. The only sound only came when turning the key into ignition, like a swishing sound (swish-swish-swish). I left it for a couple of minutes and tried again; same sound. Left it sitting in the car park for half an hour, thinking is just a flushdown or something, tried again, but now only a ticking (like a loud short circuit) sound came out.

Had some local garage check it all day and they still have no idea what's going on. They looked at the battery, connections, alternator, etc. Nothing, they have no idea what has happened.

Anybody has any idea? The car is a Vauxhall Signum Petrol 2.2 Direct AUTO on a 05 plate, 139K miles, full service history and very well maintained.

    Please help.

EDIT: No warning lights in the board computer!!!

Stick the head lights on and then try and start it, do they dim considerably? Wondering if your starter motor is stuck engaged or otherwise knackered.

    Hi,

Yes they do dim, but I will check again tonight and see by how much. I will look at the starter motor as well. anything in particular, that I should look for when checking the starter motor?

    Thanks.

If it's stuck it will be drawing power but not turning the engine so the lights will dim. Ticking sounds like it could be trying to engage the starter cog onto the engine cog and failing. Being an auto you can't bump start of course otherwise I'd say bump it and drive to a garage. I'm not an expert so I can't advise on how to check the starter itself. If there is a ticking it doesn't sound like it is stuck but it can in all seriousness be worth giving it a whack with a rubber mallet, to try and free it.
