    Default diesel engine... help. (renault)

oki got my self a little project..., i'v bought a renault kangoo van very cheap (none runner)...i wanted somthing to keep me busy, and i need a van soo ..

anyway, only had it a day, got it home, wouldnt start, charged batt, and after priming the engine started first go.
    the problems:
it dont hold water, water is peeing out of the side of the engine (drivebelt side)
its burning oil slightly... not ecessive, very light blue smoke.
the water reservoir is smoking slightly... i think i can smell diesel.

now i'm not a mechanic, so i'm wanting opionions on whats up.
i think (please correct me if im wrong) the waterpump is goosed, which caused the engine to overheat, which in turn caused the headgasket to give. hence the smoke/fumes from water reservoir, & burning oil.

now, to fix... is it just a case of renewing waterpump, skimming head and refitting with a new gasket??

oh & the timing belt was changed just last month, would this be ok to refit or would a new belt be reccomended?

    thanks

First off it sounds to me as if this engine has been cooked. Get yourself an empty clear bottle of some type, coke bottle or something, and fill it up with water. Remove the cap from the coolant expansion tank and make sure the coolant is topped right up to the neck of the tank. Then with the engine running, quickly invert the bottle and put it in the neck of the expansion tank (be quick so all the water don't run out ya bottle lol). If the head gasket has gone, the water in the coke bottle will bubble profusely. Give it a few revs at the fuel pump or get the Mrs to rev it up. You may need to wait til it gets warm to get a good idea. If it does bubble away, the head gasket is a gonner and it would be wise to take the head off and get it sent off for a pressure test etc. Don't just put a head gasket on and hope for the best cos u can bet ur backside the head will be goosed if u do (sods law and all that).
With regard to the timing belt, always fit new, they're pennies anyway. HTH and good luck.

a little video of the engine running. sorry about quality, it was dark by the time i got it running.

Note the squeaking, is this the water pump or the belt?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I2gdvRoCn3g

also the "steam" rising from the expantion tank is not steam, the water is freeeeezing.
and... there is steam (real steam lol) rising from around the waterpump area if you look closely.

Sounds as if the engine is cooked bigtime. But sounds to be running ok if you see what I mean (No big end failure etc). Sounds like waterpump failure the squeeking but again hard to tell.

If it is not steam coming out of there that could be exhaust blowby. Though hard to tell.....

So that prob doesn't help lol.

aint seen the vid as computer says no ........but the water pump is on the front of the enigne behind the cam belt so this prob the water leak what normally happens is the water leak goes un checked and the thing over heats may have blow the head ...you may need to remove it and get it checked for craks and weather it is flat now ....to be fair is tyhe van worth the repair ...

Piston ring failure, so the exhaust gases blow past upwards the only way they can get out. Basically pressurises the crankcase and comes out the top. Most common one normally is the oil filler cap.

If you get stuck you got my number and ill pop down one night if yer want and have a look.

Another point that if the battery isn't holding charge the alternator could of failed, which could also be that squeeking you have heard.

hope to god its not the piston rings, that might be a step too far for me.

"If you get stuck you got my number and ill pop down one night if yer want and have a look." - i'll hold you to that

benny, it should be worth repairing, even if it needs a new (used lol)lump, it would still be well below what these vans go for.

Normally tell blow by as it 'puffs' with the engine revolutions if you see what I mean.

No worries mate can plug diagnostics into it if you want too
