Default Symptoms of faulty maf z18xe

As bove guys, engine light came on after new thermostat garage said codes are possibly maf related now some air leak or not registering air mixture an fuel etc.., cleared codes unplugged maf to see how it drove, didnt notice much difference but even with it disconnected engine light never came back on!? Plugged it back in and still not back on, so will it be back on or if not the maf what else could it be?

Have a read at this, might be of some use:

Depends on the age of your car whether you will have an EGR or not.

Cheers puppet, so clean the egr & throttle body? Its a 2005. Is cleaning them easy? Even if new to it all?

That's a good garage then if their only reading codes having a guess and hoping you'll pay for loads of parts and labour whilst they scratch their heads.

far easier to get an accurate fault diagnosis.

with some actual data readings and voltages tests.
not even half hours worth of work.

Process of elimination he said mate, either replace backbox as very slightly blowing and maybe confusing the maf or fuel and air mixture or need new maf!?? Personally carnt see a tiny hole in a back box causing this problem and throwin eml up??

If yours is a 2005, then I would reckon it probably won't have an EGR. They were only fitted for a brief time before being phased out from the Z18XE I believe. Your original post didn't mention the cars age, so thought it might be worth mentioning.

    He's talking complete bollox.

wouldnt waste anymore cash on his diagnostics anymore.
anyone that suggests a process elimination as a fault remedy prices they don't have a clue.

why not put an emissions test on and see what's actually happening fuel wise?
quick check of lambda sensors, injector times etc.

maf readings for various engine speeds.

theirs a problem somewhere for it not to be logging when the maf is disconnected

What should the car do with maf disconnected? Maybe light stayed off because he turned it off with snap on machine? Or if the problem is still present would it still come on disconnected or not if that makes sense. This has only all happened since a full service and fuel filter and thermostat change! Makes you think shudda left it alone!

Well the ecu monitors the maf signal wire voltage.

changes in air flow change the resistance across the hot wire therefore changing the voltage the ecu sees.

it also should have a power and ground.

so by disconnecting the ecu should see a full 5v and therefore log a fault for maf being open circuit and use a default setting to keep car running roughly ok.

clearing it with snap on machine is no different to clearing with any other screen.

check everything all over again after service.
