Default water returning to header tank

Should water return to the header tank continuously or only when the thermostat opens??

Thanks for the reply. since I changed the thermostat sometimes it returns all the time and sometimes I need to either rev the car or squeeze the pipes for it to return. Before I changed the stat it was fine.

When you start the car from cold it will rev at around 1000 rpm and the flow looks quite strong. As it comes off the cold start cuts out and the revs drop to around 750rpm and it drops to a trickle. I took couple of videos of this last week for another thread.

Thanks just see them it does start like that but the dwindles down to virtually nothing. I'm thinking This could also be the reason why my heating only gets hot whilst driving.

If you mean it doesn't get hot when just sat idling from cold, say when your de-icing the windows, then yes. That is because there is no load on the engine, once moving more load = more heat, and at this time of year ambient temperature means a longer heat time too. If it is giving a good strong flow when the engine is rev'd I wouldn't worry about it.

When I drive the heater is brilliant as soon as I pull up at lights or on my drive straight away the heater turns warm until I touch the throttle again then it's nice and hot.

Does the temperature gauge drop? Might be the thermostat on the way out.
