Default 1.8 VVTi Cam Actuator Solenoids

    Hi

So my Sri got the death rattle a few days ago and has been getting progressively worse.

I just removed the cam solenoids, both were perfectly clean.

Removed the orange band filters. There were 2 on each solenoid.

Left the black gauze filter on the end.

Would you guys recommend removing the black filter too?

Ok to run without filters, or replace solenoids asap?

Is it possible that one of my hydraulic lifters is sticky anyway and its nothing to do with the solenoids? Going to do an engine flush and oil change and put hydraulic lifter additive in new oil anyway.

    Thanks for all advice!!

Are you getting any error codes yet?

Personally i would replace both, about £50 each from Fleebay, give the engine a flush and drain oil, change cam solenoids and then re-fill with correct grade oil, new filter etc.

hi mate, just noticed that other thread and replied in it but never mind.

so basically the rattle started last week and was coming and going but now is basically all the time that you are under 1500 rpm. light only came on for the first time today and went out when i restarted the car.

i thought i had a sticky hydraulic lifter so in order to fix it i purchased engine flush, oil and filter, and hydraulic lifter additive to put in the new oil. but when i was at the dealer getting the oil they told me about the solenoids which prompted me to come on here and search.

so then i was thinking that if i checked the solenoids first and it fixed the rattle and it was them that was faulty i would fix that and not change the oil until it is due, as i just changed it recently anyway.

i popped the solenoids out there now and removed the band filters but not the gauze on the end wasnt sure how it came off.

they were perfectly clean when i looked at them. i guess there is some other fault inside them like they are worn, was expecting blocked filters.

    thanks

Replied on other thread, change the solenoids, they control the oil flow to the cams.
