Default key fob broke this morning

Well this morning my keyfob decided to break.. I narrowed it down to the little 'unlock' button as the other two buttons still clicked and got a response from the car..

A quick mad dash around my man cave produced an old vauxhall key, out came the soldering iron and a pair of the wife's tweezers. 20 mins later the button has been removed from the circuit board and replaced with one from the old key the fob reassembled and my car now unlocked..

I was a little later setting off due to this impromptu fix but I did not need to dump the car for a few days while VX ordered a replacement key..

Close call.. I think I will now have to invest in a new key from VX.. Are new keys available under the trade club, and can i program it to the car with the other software or do i need to wait until i next bump into somebody with tech2 etc? I refuse to pay the stealers £40 to program it to my car. I had them supply a key for my old veccy B years back and it took him about a minute to do, i was peed off.

I have had two copy flip keys from the Bay of E up till now with varying degrees of success, but tbh they were both substandard crap in comparison to a real GM flip key.. SO this time i will get a proper one.

You can buy sets of replacement buttons to solder on from the bay of E for about £3, I did it with my spare key a few months ago. Five minute job to do.

but they are not programmed to my car, i am not even sure if they are 2 or 3 button keys.. My understanding is that keys from other cars cannot be just reprogrammed to work in another car... Or am i mistaken?

As far as I know, cars are programmed to keys, so you just add the number to the list and away you go. Up to about five I think. New blade and away you go.

You can virginise a flip key nige if you want the hassle of unsoldering the programmable chip, finding a partly programmed (ready for Vauxhall) chip and refitting and then you CAN program it to your car with the other software.Dismantling the bonded case can be troublesome and often means you need to replace the casing too.
However, some auto locksmiths will take a used key, virginise it, and then offer it with a blade cut to your code, just leaving you to program it.
Somone I know will sell such a key for around £45 on ebay

Oh, and No, you can't re-program a used keyfob to be re-used on your car
