Default Weather has finally got us to look at a 4x4 - buying advice required

I have been working away and the missus has been stuck in the country unable to get to work.....so looks the veccy is going and a BMW X3 will make its way for its run at serving us for a few years as the family car

I'm looking at getting a 2008 2.0d SE with a few extras like leather and panoramic roof and low miles with 44k

Anyone owned one of offer any advice on buying one as the one I have seen is private sale

Good as a car, bad as a 4x4! They are designed more to be car like, which has left them little better than a FWD car. If you are getting one, don't be tempted by one with big wide wheels. A lot of the 4wd cars have proven to be better in icy conditions. We've been looking at the Mitsubishi Outlander ourselves to replace the Volvo, but still undecided. Although as a driving machine the bm would be better.

Is it permanent 4wd or part-time? The Freelander is permananet and the X-trail is part time. My dad has the X-trail diesel, this is his second one and loves it. Might be a cheaper alternative?

If you are buying it as a 4x4 like you said then its not really the best tool for the job. There are far better alternatives available mate. Its probably a nice car for the road tho, in an estate car way.

Another + for the xtrail my dad loves his and he's clocked over 130k in his and its still going strong.
Are you sure that the x3 is 4wd as I thought some if not all were only 2wd ?

A vec on winters will go places an X3 on summers can only dream of. If you still plan to stick with summer tyres getting an X3 is pointless.

The X3 is 4wd drive and BMW use the X drive system. I don't think we will ever intend on tackling serious offroading in it maybe the odd bumpy muddy track when we park it to go up any mountains something we can't do in the vectra! The roads out our way are potholed on the country roads and never see any grit. Mostly it will be used to cope with the rubbish weather we have and loading everything we need to go hiking/mountain climbing and surfing and sticking two teenage kids in it!

Howdo. Have you ever been in these kinds of 4x4s? I've seen a few, lexus and bmw, and invariably there's really not actually that much room inside them, especially with the smaller ones like X3.

The loading space in the X3 is 480 litres the same as the vectra (The X5 has a smaller boot!) but the room inside is bigger than the veccy for sure
