Default BP could soon be the petrol retailer, without any forecourts

BP is considering a complete change to its petrol forecourt business model

At the moment there are about 1200 BP branded petrol forecourts (in the UK)

35 sites have been selected for complete removal of the forecourt
180 sites have been selected for partial removal of the forecourt

The changes do not affect dealer or franchise stores

The 35 sites affected would have the forecourt converted into a larger car park and store building extension

The 180 sites affected would have the number of petrol pumps reduced by at least 50%, then similar to above
However, in many cases a raze-rebuild would take place

    The sales figures contradict that
I suspect someone at head office has not realised that petrol sales have fallen but shop sales have increased, and put two and two together to make three

As an example, our shop sales (excluding petrol) are typically £55000 per week, which is almost three times what a store with the same square footage would expect
As above, it is the fuel sales and convenience of a forecourt that bring this

I full support the reduction of the stores selected for a reduced forecourt, but doing away with it totally...
Tesco tried this a few years ago and those stores have all returned very poor results

I can see the logic, and it was only a matter of time. I wouldnt mind so much, but being one who only ever buys fuel from a garage - I wish they would have (during core working hours) a till for shoppers and a till just for fuel - Or at least install the pay at pumps feature as standard.

There is currently a survey underway to establish this, as both customers have been complaining and both staff and managers making senior management aware of this
Furthermore, this is a known issue and is currently under discussion
Equally, many stores now have up to five till points, but at no point do they actually have enough staff to use them all!
However, this redundancy does mean that if one or more of those tills fail then another can be used, and we find that useful

Sadly BP does not have any plans to install such equipment, it would much prefer customers to enter the shop and pay, even if they do not intend to purchase any shop goods

In turn the above go together
About 5% of customers purchase fuel only, this is down from nearly 20% ten years ago

Went to the local Tesco filling station yesterday at 14:30. Presumably as she was on her own, the women had locked the shop off and had everyone paying at the hatch. I did want a few other bits, but couldn't be bothered standing outside freezing whist she went and got them. Furthermore the experience has left a sour taste with me, and I'll probably go elsewhere next time if I want more than just petrol.

Completely agree. Branded stations need more pay at pumps, one on the main reasons, up to lately, I have constantly used supermarkets. I hate standing in queues while someone pays for a pile of shopping when I could easily have paid at the pump. Asda have the right idea, unmanned forecourts. Upside of this is no queues and no loss of money due to drive offs.
