Default Handbrake problem - advice please

    Hi folks,

I've had a strange problem with my handbrake today and hope you can offer some advice.

I pulled up the lever as normal and it came all the way up but hadn't put the brake on.

I tried a few times and sometimes it acted as normal and put the brake on and sometimes it just pulled up with no resistance
    .
I have read about the handbrake recall and checked with my local dealer who said that mine had been "modified".

    What should I be checking?

    Thanks

    John

The 'handbrake recall' concerns replacing the spring behind the thumb button with a meatier one as there was a chance the original weaker spring might allow the mechanism to slip.

As to what's occurring with yours, I can't be much help. My guess would be that the mechanism (probably at the rear calipers) is jamming of frozen - sometimes it is releasing as normal, sometimes the mechanism jams and you just get a slack cable.

Weather permitting I'd be having the rear wheels off and thoroughly checking and cleaning the calipers and handbrake mechanisms.

Take the handbrake off on the flat surface and pump the brake pedal hard it should auto adjust and reset the rear pads.

Mine does this it's a farce untill you can have a good look at it in warmer weather.

    Many thanks guys.

It's a bit snowy here and the car sits in the drive (not on a slope thankfully !) so I'll be having a look when the snow goes.

    Cheers
