    Default battery voltage advice

hi guys, been having trouble starting the car for a few weeks now so im starting to try different things.
i dont know anything about battery voltages etc... so please excuse if i dont make sense (hopefully some of you tech minded people know lol)
ive recently had a new bracket holding the tensioner on my alternator as it sheered off. so thats fixed. still getting 20 second cranks until starts.
ive taken the battery off and connected to a charger. it ran for about 5mins then said its fully charged so i connected a volt meter whilst fully charged and read 13.7, after about 15mins, i checked it again & its dropped to 12.5. is this normal? ive got a maintenance free battery with the little window & i can vaguely see a green mark.
    ive got a 2.0ltr dti 54 plate.
any help with this would be greatly appreciated. if this is normal behaviour im going to try the thermostat discon in the morning & see if it starts straight away.

    Battery charge is fine mate.

You need to see what it drops to under load though.

Yep, that seems good, you have to let the battery settle after the car has been run to get a true reading. If you are still concerned about it, take it to a garage and ask them to do a load test on it.

Occasionally batteries can still read full voltage but cannot give the starting current/amperage, however you said you can crank the for a good 20 seconds, which would suggest the battery is ok.

Try checking your glow plugs, look for air leaks in the fuel supply.

Have you had a look at the Starter motor threads - it cured my cold start problem after I had changed all the usual suspects - they seem to run slower as they get older and wear. Have you also tried cycling the glowplugs a couple of times before actually trying to start the engine. If you have dodgy glowplugs you will normally get what sounds like the engine misfiring for several seconds when it does fire as well as smoke or a smell of unburnt fuel.

I hope it ain't the starter cars only worth 700 quid lol. It does sound like it misfires and I do get smoke which input down to just the cold starts haven't noticed any smell of fuel but I could be wrong. The temp sensor thread said its by the battery on the right hand side, anyone know if its the sane in a dti ?

Put battery back on car, took 3 or 4 attempts I even cycled the glow plugs 5 times. When started put volt meter on battery and measured 14.6 switched engine off and it's 13.5. Is there a way of checking if its the starter or glow plugs? I can't find the therm sensor to unplug to force glow plugs to heat up longer.

Right mate disregard what a volt meter tells you on a battery it performance. Can only be tested by a battery tester which puts a load on and tests the cells for performance ie I had abattery showing 12.8 volts but on a tester under load was 28% good and the other was 12.6 volts and 76% good its all about cold cranking amps if you take it to a spares place, kick fit, halfords or the like kind they will test it for you for free usually even the main dealers will have experience a tester that does it but a volt meter will only tel you the volts its holding and nothing else hope this helps

Would a dodgy battery still make the car start perfect after the 1 start up?

All depends on the time between and how much performance the battery has if the engine is still warm I would say starts fairly Easy
