Yes you can different sized tyres on the front to those on the rear (and vice versa). As long as you have the same size on the same axles it's ok.

But the approved sizes in the 17" range are 215/50/17 and 225/45/17.

The size you're asking about (215/55/17) could have insurance complications, as well as having a slightly bigger rolling radius.

Have you noticed any humming noise from them yet? They sound like you've got a wheel bearing gone after a while... I've had two sets on different cars with different sizes and both were the same, very noisy.

Look at 225/45/17, you'll find these are lots cheaper than 215/50/17

due to budget restrictions and the fact that my tyres had as much grip lift on them as a babys backside, I had to get 4 retreads on cost me less than £200 and I have to say after reading all the negative comments about retreads I am massively impressed with them even in the snow

    there 225 45 17

    Which ones are they?

Both the pairs i had were the MA V1, its the tread pattern which creates the noise after a while. The pair i've got at present are about 2/3 worn down and on the front to get them worn out more quickly. They seem quite noisy at 30mph or just below which is a pain for everyday town driving. That said looking at http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyre/Maxxis/ not all their tyres have the same tread pattern so won't have the loud humming
