Default How To: Better Numberplate Lights

Thought I'd create a How to as one day I decided to Change my signum rear number plate bulbs to led type.

After noticing that the old plastic lenses were faded and dirty on the inside and almost a yellow colour I figured a clear lense would be better, also the metal contacts are fixed into the holders and make contact when fixed in place. Ie No wires to fiddle with, so to get around this problem I did this......

After eventually screwing, drilling and prising out the rusty screws I removed the old plastic lamps.

With a fine hacksaw and wearing gloves gently saw off the top of the lens from the bulb holder part. One side of one of mine did snap off but superglue is your friend.

Then I ordered in a piece of 2mm thick clear acrylic perspex (100mm x 100mm) is suffice. Then Cut 2 strips the width of the old lens, scrape the edges smooth with a craft knife.

Then glue the removed holders with attatched metal contacts to the centre of the perspex pieces.

I didnt screw mine to the car as I was scared of cracking the lenses, so I covered the back of the holders with strong double sided foam tape and fixed into place! With 39mm 16 Led festoon bulbs and is as bright as anyone could want
