Perfectly normal. The PAS pump is electrically powered and takes quite a bit of juice out of the battery. It shouldn't do it, or hardly noticable when driving and you've got the engine revs up a bit.

Can't answer your other question, but you might get some replies asking what engine, etc. Yes, people can look at your profile to find it (if you've included it), but not everyone knows that to find the info.

As Big Dave said, i've measured the PAS taking 70amps briefly.
Replacing the battery with the biggest one you can fit in the battery box helps, especially if it's the original battery.
    What engine and mileage??

Exactly the same - at low engine rpm (<1500rpm) the alternator isn't producing enough current to supply the power steering pump and all the other electrics fully, so the voltage dips a little. A bigger battery and ensuring the battery and alternator connections are in good condition helps reduce the impact though. It's more noticeable with a GID simply because it's larger backlight draws more current than the TID backlight.

Check the ground/earth (black!) connection. Sometimes a bad ground in the circuit can cause issues too.

Think there is a thread/how2 on upgrading the earth cable in the engine compartment, which does also help.
