Default vectra 1.9 cdti auto(150) non starter

this morning i went to start my car, dash lights all light up, turn the key to start and nothing, just a faint, relay click!!
Took the starter off the car, stripped it and cleaned it, checked all the contacts, tried it by putting it over a battery and it engaged.
Fitted it back on the car, tried it again and nothing, still only the relay clicking, took the relay out, have looked over it and there in no signs of burning out.
What else can there be on this car that will cause this issue, i have power at the starter as i have checked the wiring (and even got more than a little spark)

Any help would be appreciated the car is immobile and as its an auto it cant even push start

i think i have got to the bottom of it, but would appreciate if someone could confirm my thinking is correct:

Fuse 2 had blown, this is the starter fuse, as a 'bodge' i by passed it, the solenoid now clicks but will not engage the starter, so the starter is potentially fubar'd

I believe the fuse blew this morning because it was cold, the starter jammed and drew more current than the fuse could supply.

I still dont understand why when i put the starter over a battery it engaged

battery voltage is about 13v after i have been messing about with trying to get it going.

it had a new alternator and battery not long back, the alternator capacitor failed and fried the battery

i have looked at this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9PWG6Il_ZJI and followed all the instructions step by step, my starter does exactly what it should, but when i put it back in the car it will click once, and then nothing.
the starter seems to stick against the flywheel, when i turn the engine by hand it will disengage and then if i try again it will click and stick.

This is really frustrating, i can now remove a starter in about 5 mins where i have done it so many times.

With it being auto it is in p or n ain't it?

If so, If you go through the box is it following.
Ie if it's in P is the dash in P and not R?

    fixed!!!!

It was the starter all along, there was high resistance in the solenoid, this meant that when you did a bench test it would act like it should work, but on the car it wasnt man enough to do the job.

A little bit of voltage testing soon establish that it could only be the starter we had

    12.7v @ battery
12.6v @ power connector on solenoid
.27V @ the ignition contact of the solenoid

The giveaway was when we did a resistance, i had been advised to see about .3v-.5v i was getting 2 volts

Thanks for all your help guys
